Call for Artists
The Joshua Tree Chamber of Commerce invites Artists to create public works of art from segments of 16″ diameter PVC Water Pipe.
The segments are in various lengths; from 1-1/2 to 3 feet long.
We ask only three things (the only three rules):
(1) A $5 donation per pipe segment regardless of size;
(2) A commitment to turn your creative energy on the segment
and return your work to us for public display and/or auction
to benefit the Joshua Tree Chamber of Commerce.
(Date and details of the Auction to be announced.)
(3) The final product must be made, at least in part, of the pipe.
· The pipe can be cut with circular saws, routers and other tools.

· One can drill holes in it, or screw or bolt “accessories” to it.

· It readily accepts latex paint.

Finished works to be publicly displayed in the Town of Joshua Tree and then auctioned for the benefit of the Joshua Tree Chamber of Commerce.
Please call the Chamber Office for details or to arrange to pick up a water pipe segment 760-366-3723.

Feeling the Love for the Exquisite Corpse Show
The Red Arrow Gallery in Joshua Tree
By Andy Woods

I had the fortunate pleasure to experience the current show at The Red Arrow Gallery in Joshua Tree. The artist’s of this show have breathed new life into a traditional art form (the technique was invented by Surrealists in 1925). It is similar to an old parlour game called Consequences in which players write in turn on a sheet of paper, fold it to conceal part of the writing, and then pass it to the next player for further contribution. The rules of this show are to have three artists individually create one part of a three piece art project with each only seeing one inch of what the preceding artist contributed. Each artist creates a head, body and legs to complete three complete pieces. Bring three pieces together, one from each artist, as one creation and voila you have an Exquisite Corpse.

I could mention how Exquisite the show is with 39 participating artists or how the completed works are amazing. I could give special recognition to team leader groups like Bret Philpot, that collaborated with Bobby Furst and Diana Durr to create the shows best pieces, or Zaina Alwan’s group, with her breaking the rules interactive puzzle, that included 9 artists total (instead of 3). I could also acknowledge that Tobias Crabtree’s and Ted Quinn’s group, with Jesika Von Rabbit & Travis Cline, created exceptional work. Finally, I could mention that the shows curator and The Red Arrow director, Katie Shaw, has given us the most exciting show that the gallery has had to date.

Okay, so I did mention these things. But what I really want to express about my visit to the opening of this show is the love that I felt in the gallery. This bunch of artists that includes new comers such as Bonnie Lagassa, the owner of beloved Joshua Tree restaurant Crossroads, to established artists of the Morongo Basin, such as Chuck Caplinger, have come together for the love of art, friendship and collaboration. The feeling in the room was that of accomplishment, love for one another and love for the art. This is a group of artists that know the meaning of, dare I say, creating art.

Exquisite Corpse is now showing through August. Check online at theredarrowgallery.com for hours of operation.

It’s wonderful, that even from Pasadena, I can write and compose here on HWY 62. Last night’s summer gathering was a huge success. I was happy to be able to attend before leaving town. One thing it showed me: This was a group of people who could work together for the greater good of all the basin artists. I saw new faces and old. Everyone in good spirits and the usual feast of food and great music. Bobby Furst’s studio is a place that leaves you in awe. At least I was coveting everything… or wishing to. If you missed it, make sure you see Bobby Furst’s studio during the Open Studio Tour or by appointment. – magentaRaven

On August 11th, 2007 the MBCAC presented the Open Studio Art Tours promotional posters with the public at the Annual Joshua Tree Community Social. MBCAC President, Scott Monteith, Public Relations Syndee Slayton and Art Tours Director Andy Woods were on hand to invite the public to leaf through a printed version of the new website ArtTours2007.com featuring the lineup of participating artists. The 10 day event was greeted with enthusiasm from attendees who are marking their calendars and contacting friends to join them for the adventure. Also on hand were copies of the MBCAC ArtLink newsletter, the current EFlash, a list of fall MBCAC Venue Exhibitions, membership forms and contact information for participating in the arts.

New members who signed up were invited to the Summer Gathering of Artists as well as general public who expressed an interest in supporting the arts in the basin area. MBCAC Board and Chaparral Artists members assisted the Historical Society in an interactive presentation of the Morongo Basin History before a barrage of door prizes were raffled away. The MBCAC would like to thank the Joshua Tree Chamber of Commerce, Chaparral Artists and the sponsors for making the event a great success.

Kurt Schauppner is looking for artists interested in contributing to a live auction which will raise funds for production of his screenplay, “Once Upon A Dirt Road,” which will be filmed entirely in the Desert Heights area of Twentynine Palms.
In order to raise money for the project, Schauppner and friends have organized “Kurt’s Kabaret,” a dinner, show and live and silent auction to be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25 at the Twentynine Palms Elks Lodge.
Anyone interested in donating work to the auction is asked to call Schauppner at 362-4577 and leave a message.

Many MBCAC artists unfortunately do not have websites. From time to time on this blog we will feature one of our non-web artists. We are also happy to feature anything new that is brought to our attention. Keep us awake. Thank you. Here is Deane Locke from Yucca Valley. Working in watercolors and pastels.
